Wetlands I: What are Wetlands?

Module 1 provides an introduction to wetlands basics and covers topics such as: Why wetlands are important, why wetlands are regulated, why the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is involved in their regulation, and determining whether the protection of a wetland should come under the jurisdiction of Federal authorities.

Wetlands II: Wetlands Regulations

Module 2 focuses mostly on law and examines the often complex legal regulations that control the administration of the wetlands program. This module also explores how protection of wetlands is driven by both judicial and political considerations.

Wetlands III: The 404 Permitting Process

Module 3 concentrates on the 404 permitting process itself and covers the following topics: What forms are used, how permits are generated, how to consult with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and submitting a formal application. Module 3  includes an overview of the steps and processes required to get an approval, and in the case of a permit denial how to implement whatever modifications are required.

Wetlands IV: Wetlands Mitigation & Future Directions

Module 4 Covers additional topics related to the overall permitting process, including mitigation and mitigation banking (a relatively new concept that facilitates permit processing for developers.) The course also includes an overview of enforcement actions taken in cases where wetlands are filled in without a permit as well as a review of recent changes to the wetlands program and a forecast of future changes in wetlands regulation.
